The so-called “Witch-hunt” is one of the darkest pages in European history between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. It is impossible to calculate exactly how many its victims were. The most rigorous academic studies, estimate that the trials for witchcraft were at least ninety thousand, and forty-five thousand people were sentenced to death; eight out of ten, were women.
The most widespread accusation was that of practicing, in addition to black magic, various satanic activities and above all that of having made a pact with the devil that gave them the power to perform hex. However, the daily chronicles of violence against women reveal that, despite the undeniable progress made in the field of gender equality, the other half of Heaven is still being persecuted as soon as it tries to cross the boundaries of the traditional triad of family, motherhood, couple.
In the project “Sorcerers and Spells” I wanted to pay homage to women who lived in periods of full obscurantism: for this work I was inspired by female figures taken from famous paintings, drawing inspiration for the lights from paintings from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century; to this series of 10 portraits I have added 10 photographs of flowers, with the intriguing title “Spells”.
La cosiddetta «caccia alle streghe», è una delle pagine più buie della storia europea tra il quindicesimo e il diciottesimo secolo.
È impossibile calcolare con esattezza quante furono le sue vittime. Gli studi accademici più rigorosi, stimano che i processi per stregoneria siano stati almeno novantamila e quarantacinquemila i condannati a morte, di cui otto su dieci erano donne.
L’accusa più diffusa era quella di praticare, oltre alla magia nera, svariate attività sataniche e soprattutto quella di aver stretto un patto col diavolo che conferiva loro il potere di eseguire malefici. Del resto le quotidiane cronache di violenza sulle donne narrano che, nonostante gli innegabili progressi compiuti sul terreno della parità dei diritti di genere, l’altra metà del cielo viene ancora perseguitata non appena prova a scavalcare i confini della tradizionale triade famiglia, maternità, coppia.
Nel progetto “Streghe e incantesimi” ho voluto rendere omaggio alle donne vissute in periodi di pieno oscurantismo: per questo lavoro mi sono ispirato a figure femminili riprese da dipinti famosi, traendo ispirazione per le luci da pitture dal XV al XVII secolo; a questa serie di 10 ritratti ho affiancato 10 fotografie di fiori , dall’intrigante titolo “Incantesimi”.
From these sophisticated images of flowers radiates all the magic that only the female figure can convey: unpredictability, movement, color, joy, freedom but above all life! Created with flowers placed underwater and mixed with colored inks, they release feelings of fluidity and vivacity, helping to balance the sobriety and obscurantism of the portraits of the sorcerers. Each sorcerer has her own color-matched spell, but they can also be read independently.
Da queste sofisticate immagini di fiori sprigiona tutta la magia che solo la figura femminile può trasmettere: l’ imprevedibilità, il movimento, il colore, la gioia, la libertà ma sopratutto la vita! Realizzate con fiori posti sott’acqua e mescolati con inchiostri colorati sprigionano sensazioni di fluidità e vivacità, contribuendo a bilanciare la sobrietà ed l’oscurantismo dei ritratti delle streghe. Ogni strega ha un suo incantesimo abbinato cromaticamente, ma la loro lettura può anche essere indipendente.
